★★★★★★★★★★5.0 · 515 reviews · from $131Our pick

At a central Osaka dojo, Toshi and Kumiko introduce you to samurai culture, teach basic kendo footwork and strikes, and outfit you in uniform, armor, and bamboo sword. You finish with a supervised match, photos, videos, and a look at the dojo’s samurai artifacts.

“Amazing experience with a great husband and wife team. You get a quick run-through of samurai history and then you’ll get fully suited up for a hands on lesson. It’s a good workout as you progress through strikes, combinations, and counters with the footwork to match. After the lesson you’re welcomed to challenge the sensei, I highly recommend asking for a full speed match to appreciate his skill. Afterwards the hosts were kind enough to share some snacks and recommendations for our remaining time in Japan.”
